Beirut or beer pong game has continued to gain popularity in the United States. You can find it anywhere from college fraternity houses to tailgate parties. This game is believed to originated in the 1950′s at Dartmouth College and more closely mirroring ping pong than it does now.

The name beer pong is typically reserved for the version which utilizes paddles, while the name Beirut was adopted in the 1980′s for the paddle-less variation. Debate still rages about who created the specific nomenclature, however the rules are shockingly similar.

Setting up the game itself is simple. There are two teams, usually with two players each, both starting at the end of a long table. Both start at the end of a table, preferably a ping pong table. Next, set up eith 6, 10, or 15 cups filled, about half way, with a beverage. As the name implies many people opt for beer.

Beer pong, obvious by the name, uses an alcoholic beverage such as beer. Light beers are the best, because of the speed and quantity of beer that can be consumed. Dartmouth College actually banned beer pong. This has forced students to play this game with root beer or alternative beverages.

Since the game is considered a house game rather than an official game, rules vary quite a bit. These rules include number of cups, styles of shots permitted or mandated, and strategies used.

Some games require a bounce before entering the cup, just like ping pong.

For most rule sets when a cup is hit, the opposing team must drink the contents and then rearrange or re-rack the cups. The game ends when one team forces the other team to drink all of their cups. However, some rules such as redemption or death cup are set so that the losing team can stay alive if they hit two shots in a row into the same cup.

It doesn’t matter what rules or names are used, beer pong is still gaining popularity across the United States. Always take some precautions while playing any game that involves alcohol. However, if the players are careful, beer pong can be a great way to take a party to the next level. Bragging rights of being beer pong champion can make a big man on campus out of anyone.

Dating all the way back to the 1970′s, the game of Beer Pong has gained huge popularity in many places such as college campuses, basements, garages and even in pools. Many believe the game was invented sometime in the late 70′s and was modeled after the same game played with actual Ping Pong Paddles. Rumor has it that at an unnamed university, there were no Paddles available so the players resorted to just tossing the Ping Pong Balls into the cups instead.

The game of Beer Pong, also called Beirut in some circles, consists of 2-4 players
standing at opposite ends of a Ping Pong Table or other large table, attempting to land the Ping Pong Balls in the the other teams cups, thus making them drink (or chug) the beer that is in the cup that the ball landed in. Typically the cup is filled 1/4 to 1/2 full with beer. The team that hits all the other teams cups first is declared the winner.

There are many rules associated with the game of Beer Pong although the rules will vary at practically every different place that you play. Rollbacks happen when a player or team makes one or both of their shots and gets to shoot again before the other team. Bouncing the ball into an opponents cup makes them drink double although it is quite difficult and the opposing team can try to block a bounced ball. Distraction is also a ploy that can be used by the defending team where gestures are made, noises are made, insults thrown across the table and even some provocative actions when members of the opposite sex are involved.

Typically an opponent can request a re-rack of the cups once during each game. Re-rack means that the cups can be re-arranged into virtually any shape to make the shots easier. Popular shapes would be a triangle, diamond, straight line or sidecar.
The supplies you would need for a game of Beer Pong are very simple. All you need is 14 plastic cups, 6 for each team and 2 extra for water to wash the balls. A good supply of Ping Pong Balls, some type of long table, and BEER!

Many hard-core players have custom tables for Beer Pong. You can also buy very nice
portable, fold up tables that can travel with you wherever you may want to play. These days, there are even Floating Beer Pong Tables to use in a pool or on a calm lake. There is even professional association’s popping up like “The World Series of Beer Pong” which held a 3 day $50,000 Prize Money Tournament in Las Vegas! The Pabst Blue Ribbon sponsored Tournament was held at the Flamingo in January 2009 and featured nearly 800 players from 45 states.

Although the game can be an absolute blast and lots of fun with a big group at
a party, always drink responsibly and hand over the keys instead of getting behind the wheel after playing Beer Pong.

Beer Pong VS Beirut

Dear Drinkers,

Thanks for checking out my article to the point that I was asked to do one more this week. Just like the general public to cause more work for me. I’m just kidding… but seriously. Haha. Yeah I’m not really that funny at all.

So back to business, this week I would like to discuss one thing that has been bothering me for a while. As you know, I am a college student and, as one, I know what Beer pong is. But what I want to know is do I really? The answer, surprisingly to many, is no. Most college students have actually never played Beer pong in their lives. They have, however, played Beirut on several occasions.

What modern college kids are calling Beer pong is in actuality called Beirut. Beirut is 6 or 10 cups in a triangle on a table while teams on one or 2 try to throw ping-pong balls into their opponent’s cups. (For more details, look on out games page. It’s still under Beer pong.) Now we get to some real Beer pong.

OK, so the game of beer pong is, in fact, very similar to Beirut but at the same time, quite different. The table is the same, preferably a ping-pong table. And the balls, cups, and beer are the same. The only real difference is that there are more 10 cups per side and instead of throwing the balls; you actually hit them with a paddle. I find it to be a lot more fun. This does bring up a new topic though.

If the college scene, being that is, was, or going to be most of America, calls Beirut Beer pong, should we just switch them. Beirut will be called Beer pong and visa versa. This will solve the problem, right? I personally don’t think so. While people who were calling it the wrong name get to still call it that name the people who know it as Beirut lose out.

Pretty much it’s your decision. If you haven’t tried playing actual Beer pong, I would seriously suggest it. It’s loads of fun (much like your mom) and you end up getting really drunk (hence, why I know your mom is loads of fun). So try your hand and tell me what you think. The next thing you have to consider is whether you will leave your table tennis table in a permanent place or keep packing and unpacking it . Most people go for a folding table, due to space constraints, which can be folded and packed away in a corner when you are not playing.

Make sure that the roller wheels are good quality flexible wheels so that they can be moved easily. The braking mechanism on these wheels is very good on a Stiga ping pong table.

Many people are very comfortable playing on a one inch thick table because the bounce is very even. People believe that the thicker a table is, the better the bounce. Very true. But a 0.75 inch table is not bad and will give you a reasonable bounce. A one inch table is preferred because that is the table people grow up playing, especially at the community center or at tournament level. I have a one inch Stiga ping pong table at home because I grew up playing with them at school tournaments.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that your table tennis table should have strong legs and supports to withstand the test of time. Some tables come with an additional leveler which is ideal for surfaces where the floor is not level. These levelers will help in keeping your table straight and level. Other things you will need to check is whether the playing surface of the table is even. Run your eye at the playing surface of the table and check that there is no warping or folds on any parts of the table.

Make sure the net clamps of the table have a soft padding under them so that they do not cause any scratch marks on the table. The clamps should also not dig into the underside of the table. Finally, check out the 30-23 rule on your Stiga ping pong table. Drop a ping pong ball from a height of 30 cm anywhere on the table and it should bounce back to about 23 cm. This 23 cm bounce should be even on parts of the table and you can be pretty sure you have one of the best quality tables.

Beer pong is American’s most popular drinking game.  This article is meant to introduce someone who has never played before so you can start playing this really entertaining and competitive game.

To play beer pong you need 20 oz plastic cups, ping pong balls, a table to play on, beer to drink and friends to play with.  All inexpensive and easy to find.  Now that you have the materials together you have to set up.  Set up the cups in a triangle formation on both sides of the table.  Each side is for each team playing.  If you are playing 1 on 1 then play with 6 cups on each side, if you are playing 2 on 2 then play 10 cups on each side.  Now you need 1 more cup on each side filled with water which is used to clean the balls off before you shoot.

Now you pour the beer in the cups.  Usually if you are playing 6 cup you use 1 beer and if you are playing 10 cup you use 2 beers.  Many places use water in the back 4 cups and a beer in the front 6.  You can do whatever you want – always remember to drink at your own pace.  Now you take the ping pong balls and try to shoot them into your opponents cups.  Each time a cup is sunk, it is taken off the table and drank by the defending team.  First team to sink all of their opponents cups wins.

By doing this, the person will have a better understanding of how to play. You may want to play a game or two at first with another person and have the child watch what you do, to give them an idea of what to expect.

Playing ping pong ball with children who have autism, creates a purpose of not only exercise, but it helps one to learn, discover how to have fun, laugh, be a team, have a challenge to gain self-confidence, it helps the individual from being isolated, full of anxiety, and depression. Develops coordination in foot and arm work, eye contact on the ball, and build up of the muscles.

In addition, children with autism that play ping pong ball, have slowly overcome some of their negative stress levels, that have brought the positive purpose for them to become more calm and relaxed, with less anger outbursts, and tantrums. It creates emotional health, by building the child who has autism, to gain their self-confidence and enables them to communicate to have better relationships with other children and adults. One important thing to recognize, is, when playing ping pong ball with autistic children, it will bring about fun and laughter, which also builds stronger relationships and improves communication skills which is sometimes difficult for people with autism.

When you are playing ping pong ball, the purpose is not to stress winning, but just to have fun and a joyous time. Try not to take the game too seriously, because if the child loses or makes a mistake, he or she, may go away in tears. Instruct the child that it is okay to lose. One does not have to be a winner to enjoy the game.

It is imperative that the ping pong game is not controlled by rules or goals, which could confuse the child with autism and cause, he or she, not to want to play the game and walk away in tantrums or anger outbursts. Instruct the child to play the game, with love and encouragement and lots of patience.

There becomes a sense of peace and a positive detachment from every day reality, by playing the game of ping pong ball. This decreases the amount of tantrums and anger outbursts the child of autism might have with their disorder.

Purchase an inexpensive ping pong ball table. Play the game with your autistic child, to have fun and enjoyment and there will be positive purposes that will enrich both you and your child.

Yes, the 1-inch thick table will give the ball a more consistent bounce. But the price difference – usually hundreds of dollars’ worth – is too much to make this consistency unimportant to the player just out for fun.

Whether or not you buy the thicker or less expensive table, what should always be important is the table’s sturdiness. Strong legs should definitely be a consideration. It will be more durable, especially when kids are the main players. This sturdiness will withstand most anything kids will do to it.

What buying a ping-pong table boils down to is your satisfaction with it. Your table should have a smooth finish, no rough edges or patches. And the ball should bounce consistently anywhere on the table. A good test to determine this is to drop a ball from a foot off the table. If it consistently bounces back up 9-10 inches, then you’re okay.
