Most sports will require some kind of skill or some form of characteristics that will make playing a little bit easier. Height for example is an advantage when it comes to basketball as players who are tall can easily get to the baskets. Bowling, on the other hand, requires strength of the arm as well as steadiness because the bowling ball can be really heavy. Chess needs a mind that thinks strategy and end game while those who are involved with gymnastics will need flexibility and coordination. Although all these can actually be learned through constant practice, there are still people who seem to play these sports so naturally.

Table tennis, however is one of those sports that seem to require no prerequisite conditions. Everything can actually be learned through practice, including the speed of the reflexes.

The start of the game

Similar to the beginnings of other sports, Table Tennis also began as a social activity. It is actually quite similar to tennis and to badminton except that instead of a lawn or a court with a net in the middle, table tennis has well… a table. In fact, Fred Perry, a World Champion in the sport went on to became a champion in Tennis. That’s how related these games are.

During the second half of the 19th century, the game gained popularity in England and even had various names such as Gossima and Whiff-Whaff. But of course, the name Table Tennis caught on. The name Ping Pong also became really popular.

Purportedly, the word ping pong came from the sound of the ball as it strikes the table and the rackets. But unlike other sports games, which are played primarily outdoors, table tennis became really popular as an leisure activity for the family. In fact, in the early 19th century, it is often played as an after-dinner activity during parties.

Between the periods 1905 to 1910, the craze for the ping pong spread through Central Europe and eventually to Asian countries like Japan, China and Korea.

After a period of waning interests, table tennis was once again revived in England, particularly in Wales by the early 1920s. This time, the name table tennis was officially used while ping pong became a trademark. At this time, national associations of players of table tennis were formed and rules about the game were standardized, not only in the country but in Europe and in the Far East as well.

Over the next years up until now, table tennis has become a worldwide sensation. By a recent accounting, the sports has about 30 million competitive players all over the world. Since leisure players are not part of that figure, one can just imagine the extent of the sport’s success.

There are actually few changes in the rules of the game since its inception. It however became, faster and more demanding than before, with players becoming more skillful with their games and faster with their reflexes. Among the changes that occur through the years are: the height of the net in the middle of the table, some rules in serving and tie-breaking matches.

These changes are only made in the biennial meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation to ensure that rules are standardized all over the world. In addition, changes are not implemented until a vote of majority is reached.

While many are familiar with the basic aspects of the game of tennis, few realize exactly how much difference a type of course can have on their game. In this article, we’ll help you learn to identify the differences of different playing surfaces and allow you to be able to efficiently adjust your game to make up for the changes a court makes.

- One commonly used surface for tennis courts is one that is known as Rebound Ace. This substance is hard, and it is found in may courts throughout the world. It consists of a basic layer of asphalt and/or concrete that is topped with acrylic paint that is combined with sand to get a semi-sticky, grippy, consistent surface. Tennis courts that are made of Rebound Ace have a predictable bounce and speed due to the fact that the court is uniformly created of the same hard materials. To that end, it’s a good place to begin playing tennis so that you can get the feel of a consistent surface.

- Another type of tennis court that you may run into is one that is made of clay. Clay courts are made of crushed-up bricks and covered with a layer of rough, loose clay. Clay courts make the ball stick to the ground more, causing the ball to slow down. Consequently, you may find yourself skidding when performing quick movements due to the loose surface. To win on a clay court, work on hitting the ball deep into your opponent’s side of the court, putting as much spin on the ball as you can. This limits your opponent’s opportunities to return the shot. Also, you may want to consider making shots that will put your opponent off of their footing, causing them to miss the return.

- Grass tennis courts are not seen as often as they used to be, but you can still find them out there. Wimbledon is a grass court, and is one of the few remaining competitions held on grass. Grass can cause the ball to bounce much lower, making grass courts a field of advantage for those who make quick, low shots. Changing up your shots from shot-type to shot-type can also provide to be an efficient advantage over your opponent when playing on grass.

Now that you know more about how the courts of tennis can effect your game, you can better understand exactly what you need to do to keep on top of your game. Happy playing!

Anyone who is considering tennis training will be happy to know that there are plenty of ways to learn how to play the game. Every way from the tennis court to the internet, the video store and even the classroom will prove to be beneficial for those wanting to learn how to play the great game of tennis. Prices will vary depending on the type of training method that is chosen, but can often be quite affordable. This is especially true of those who opt for learning at home through the use of videos or internet lessons. A professional tennis trainer, however, will likely be the most expensive way to learn but will provide a hands-on experience that none of the aforementioned options can.

If you choose to hire a tennis instructor, you will probably want to hire someone who has a lot of experience in either teaching or playing tennis. Or, if possible, find someone who has done both. During this training, you will begin to learn the various swings and in which situation each can be used. In the beginning, tennis may seem intimidating because of the physical activity that is involved, along with the need to have a very fast reaction to every situation. But, after a few lessons, you will be more familiar with the game and how to play it. Patience is the key to learning anything new and tennis is no different.

Even prior to hiring an instructor, some new tennis players may decide to learn some basics of the game before beginning the actual lessons. This can be accomplished by either purchasing books, videos or doing some research online. Either of these methods should provide an introduction to the game, the proper way to grip and swing the tennis racket, etc. With this information, any new tennis player will enter their learning phase with added confidence and will impress their instructor by how much they already know. Not to mention, anything that you can learn beforehand may end up saving you some money on the actual lessons.

With that being said, it’s important to know that there is nothing wrong with taking tennis lessons if you are a true beginner. Even if you have never held a tennis racket or held a tennis ball before, there is nothing to fear. Tennis instructors are there to help you to learn from scratch if that’s what you need. During your lessons, it will always be a good idea to have access to a tennis court and possibly even practice a little in between lessons.

Many tennis instructors work one-on-one with their students, while others prefer to educate to a group of individuals. Those who prefer to learn as much as possible, but without doing so with hands-on training may opt for online lessons. The only drawback is that this method does not provide actual practice, which can be sought separately by the learner. Friends and family can often provide valuable insight in helping one to learning how to play tennis without professional instruction.

By Gavin Dye If you are wanting to improve your tennis game then the following tennis tips on how to hit the tennis ball and basic tennis tactics should help you improve your tennis game, and start you winning more games.

By Gavin Dye

If you are wanting to improve your tennis game then the following tennis tips on how to hit the tennis ball and basic tennis tactics should help you improve your tennis game, and start you winning more games. Remember the main point of tennis is to get the ball over the net and into your opponents court in such a way that your opponent can’t return the ball. Lets start by looking at ways for you to improve your forehand and backhand strokes.

1. Make sure you are holding the tennis racket comfortably

2. On the forehand a good way is to hold it with your palm behind the handle.

3. You can use 2 hands for the backhand but do not overlap your hands. Keep your dominant hand at the bottom with the supporting hand just above the handle.

Keep an eye on the ball as reading the path of the ball will ensure you are in the right place to hit the ball. Move to where the ball will be after it has bounced and stopped rising.

Your Stance, in the beginning sideways on is good enough, if you can’t get your feet sorted out try and ensure that your shoulders are sideways to the ball.

Now you actually have to hit the ball, so try and hit it comfortably to the side of your body and slightly in front of your body and somewhere between the waist and shoulder height. When you hit the ball make sure the strings are pointing to where you want the ball to go in your opponents court.

To improve your serve, the following advice is the basic stuff:

Stand sideways on to the net, and throw the ball into the air so that it hangs nicely in the area where you want to contact the ball, it is no good throwing the ball 3 feet away. Then try and make contact with the ball in the middle of your throwing action at full stretch, slightly in front of you, and above your hitting shoulder.

Now you know the basics of how to hit the ball where are you going to hit the ball, after all you want to win the match and to do that you have to win points, so what are some tactics to make this happen.

Keep the ball in play which you do by getting the ball over the net into your opponents court. If your opponent can’t do this and you can…you will win, but lets hope your opponent is better than that. Make your opponent move in order to hit the ball and try to get them off balance and test their skill to see if they can hit the ball while moving. While doing this remember and keep yourself in a good position on the court and don’t get caught on one side of the court or between the baseline and the net.

Remember to look for your opponents weaknesses and try to play to them, and also try to play to your strengths. If you follow these tips hopefully your tennis game should start to improve.

Any pair of athletic shoes is given the generic term of `tennis shoes` but, in reality, shoes for tennis are particularly manufactured in such a way as to take the stress of the game well.

Tennis is a very fast and strenuous game and a lot of pressure is put on the feet. Therefore, a good pair of sports shoes suited to the game of tennis becomes imperative. The player should be comfortable enough in his shoes to run and jump swiftly from one end of the court to the other. The time span between each shot of tennis is barely for a second and the player has to turn or run forward or backward or sideways all in that split second. A pair of proper-fitting tennis shoes thus becomes essential not only to allow swift movement but also to provide stability when the player has to stop suddenly.

Whether it is played for leisure or professionally, tennis as game is extremely demanding. Professional players, especially, have to put in long hours of practice to get their shots right and they have to play in various types of courts if they want to make it to tournaments. Play takes place in both clay and grass courts and each court has its own distinctive characteristics. One of them maybe harder on the feet while the other may be too soft; each requires a different type of game and running around.

While serving the ball or while chasing it, the feet are instrumental in how quick the player is in getting his shot right. He has to move swiftly while maintaining his stability at the same time. The lower portion of his body has to provide the steadiness to the upper portion when a shot is played. A lot of force and power is required to play a tennis shot and this momentum is supported by the feet which give stability to the upper body. Needless to say, in such a scenario, appropriate tennis shoes assume a lot of importance.

The soles of sports shoes specifically for tennis are properly cushioned to take on the stress of the player. These can take on any type of surface and they absorb the impact of all the chasing and running around the court. They give both protection as well as flexibility to the players` feet. Firing volleys, returning the forehand or the backhand, power serving or chasing the ball; all these functions require a sturdy pair of tennis shoes.

To provide better motion, many tennis shoes have molded medial and lateral stabilizer. Extreme toe drag, slip-resistant structure and full grained leather uppers are some of the other sought-after features of tennis shoes. Adequate ventilation given by the use of the appropriate materials in its construction ensures that the shoes let the feet breathe. These features allow faster break-ins during extreme motion and give the players the firmness and flexibility to move or stop suddenly without stumbling.

The expense of buying tennis shoes of a reputed brand pays off in the end if the shoes can take the wear and tear of innumerable games on all types of court surfaces and for long hours. A beginner or someone who has no real keenness for the game but is just trying it out initially may hesitate to spend so much and that`s quite ok. Nevertheless, it is wiser to remember that a good pair of comfortable tennis shoes will only enhance the game whereas an uncomfortable pair will detract from its enjoyment.

Both amateurs and professionals will benefit from a good, solid pair of tennis shoes.

By Tennis Chart

The rules of tennis are quite simple:

Rule 1. Opponents stand on opposite sides of the court. The player who delivers the ball to start the point is called the server. The player who stands opposite and cross-court from the server is the receiver.

Rule 2. The right to serve, receive, choose your side, or give the opponent these choices is decided by a toss of a coin. If the choice of service or receiver is chosen, the opponent chooses which side to start.

Rule 3. The server shall stand behind the baseline on the deuce court within the boundaries of the singles court when playing singles and within the doubles sideline when playing doubles. All even points are played from the deuce court and odd number points played from the advantage court. The server shall not serve until the receiver is ready. Serves are made from the deuce court to the opponent’s service box on the deuce court. If the server misses his target twice, he loses the point. If the ball hits the net and goes in the correct service box, another serve is granted. If the server steps on the baseline before contact are made, the serve is deemed a fault.

Rule 4. The receiver is deemed ready if an attempt is made to return the server’s ball. The receiver can stand where he likes but must let the ball bounce in the service box. If the ball does not land in the service box, it is deemed a fault and a second serve is given. If the ball is hit by either opponent before the ball bounces, the server wins the point.

Rule 5. The server always calls his score first. If the server wins the first point, he gets a score of 15. Scoring is done like a clock. Love means zero in tennis. The second point is called 30. The third point is called 40 and game is won when the score goes back to love. If the score is 40-40, also known as deuce, one side must win by two points. Advantage-In means if the server wins the next point, he wins the game. Advantage-Out means the receiver has a chance to win the game on the next point.

LOVE 15-30-40

Rule 5. After the game, the opponents serve. Games equal 1. The first to win 6 games, by two, wins the set. The first to win 2 sets wins the match. If the score is 6-6, a tie-breaker is played. This is scored by one’s. The first team to score 7 points winning by two wins the set. The tiebreaker continues until one side wins by two.

Rule 6. If the ball goes into the net, or outside the boundaries of the court, the player who hit that ball loses the point. If the ball hits the net during the point and goes into the opponent’s court, the ball is in play. A player loses the point if he touches the net, drops his racquet while hitting the ball, bounces the ball over the net, hits a part of the surroundings such as the roof, or a tree, the ball touches him or his partner, he deliberately tries to distract the opponent.

Rule 7. A ball that lands on the line is good.

Rule 8. If players serve out of turn or serve to the wrong person or court, the point or game will stand and order will be resumed following the point or game.

I trust this initial effort of mine in the world of letters will find a place among both novices and experts in the tennis world. I am striving to interest the student of the game by a somewhat prolonged discussion of match play, which I trust will shed a new light on the game http://www.maps7.com

May I turn to the novice at my opening and speak of certain matters which are second nature to the skilled player?

The best tennis equipment is not too good for the beginner who seeks really to succeed. It is a saving in the end, as good quality material so far outlasts poor.

Always dress in tennis clothes when engaging in tennis. The question of choosing a racquet is a much more serious matter. I do not advocate forcing a certain racquet upon any player. All the standard makes are excellent. It is in weight, balance, and size of handle that the real value of a racquet frame depends, while good stringing is, essential to obtain the best results.

After you have acquired your racquet, make a firm resolve to use good tennis balls, as a regular bounce is a great aid to advancement, while a “dead” ball is no practice at all.

If you really desire to succeed at the game and advance rapidly, I strongly urge you to see all the good tennis you can. Study the play of the leading players and strive to copy their strokes. Read all the tennis instruction books you can find. They are a great assistance.

More tennis can be learned off the court, in the study of theory, and in watching the best players in action, than can ever be learned in actual play. I do not mean miss opportunities to play. Far from it. Play whenever possible, but strive when playing to put in practice the theories you have read or the strokes you have watched.

Never be discouraged at slow progress. The trick over some stroke you have worked over for weeks unsuccessfully will suddenly come to you when least expected. Tennis players are the product of hard work. Very few are born geniuses at the game.

Tennis is a game that pays you dividends all your life. A tennis racquet is a letter of introduction in any town. The brotherhood of the game is universal, for none but a good sportsman can succeed in the game for any lengthy period. Tennis provides relaxation, excitement, exercise, and pure enjoyment to the man who is tied hard and fast to his business until late afternoon. Age is not a drawback. The tennis players of the world wrote a magnificent page in the history of the World War. No branch of sport sent more men to the colours from every country in the world than tennis, and these men returned with glory or paid the supreme sacrifice on the field of honour.

The following order of development produces the quickest and most lasting results:

1. Concentration on the game.

2. Keep the eye on the ball.

3. Foot-work and weight-control.

4. Strokes.

5. Court position.

6. Court generalship or match play.

7. Tennis psychology.

Concentration.

Tennis is played primarily with the mind. The most perfect racquet technique in the world will not suffice if the directing mind is wandering. There are many causes of a wandering mind in a tennis match. The chief one is lack of interest in the game. No one should play tennis with an idea of real success unless he cares sufficiently about the game to be willing to do the drudgery necessary in learning the game correctly. Give it up at once unless you are willing to work. Conditions of play or the noises in the gallery often confuse and bewilder experienced match-players playing under new surroundings. Complete concentration on the matter in hand is the only cure for a wandering mind, and the sooner the lesson is learned the more rapid the improvement of the player.

The surest way to hold a match in mind is to play for every set, every game in the set, every point in the game and, finally, every shot in the point. A set is merely a conglomeration of made and missed shots, and the man who does not miss is the ultimate victor.

When you were a kid you had at least two pair of shoes. One pair was your “good” one your mother referred to as your “dress shoes,” while the other pair was your “everyday” shoes, most probably of athletic nature. These shoes, specially designed for sporting activities, were given the generic name “athletic shoes,” which is still considered a category that consists of running, basketball and tennis footwear. Originally introduced as part of the sporting apparel, athletic shoes are now worn as part of a casual look. Going for a walk, running across the shore, or playing outdoor games, are examples of the instances that people of all ages select to wear them. But how did all begin and why do more and more different types of athletic shoes being produced?

It is much more than the supply and demand curve, but it all comes down to that. Modern sneakers have beginnings in various sports shoes. One ancestor is the expensive British upper-class footwear of the late 1800s, used for lawn tennis, cricket, croquet, and at the beach. While at the turn of the twentieth century, football and baseball players wore essentially the same shoe type as before, the leather high-topped lace-ups with leather soles and cleats, the need to have footwear that provided a good grip onto the ground was the reason why a variety of lightweight shoes were introduced. Special shoes that would allow runners to move and lead to positive results, like increasing their speed and thus, their competitiveness, were ordered. Thus, as the need for greater speed increased, so did the athletic shoes’ number and styles. By refining and improving the shoes’ traction, sportswear companies created a subcategory in sports apparel; the shoemaking industry that is now worth billions. The sneakers’ demand emerged as athletes drew spectators to games and scientists invented new ways to accelerate human limits and improve athletes’ scores.

The dictionary defines the athletic shoe or sneaker as “a sports shoe usually made of canvas and having soft rubber soles; also called tennis shoe.” As today, uppers can be of leather, nylon, canvas, plastic, or combinations of these, and the shoe bottom surface has come to include any type of natural or synthetic rubber soles, tennis shoes are not equivalent to any other type of athletic shoe types. Sure, the term “tennis shoes” has become a generic term for athletic shoes, but this should not give the wrong impression to people that all sports shoes are the same or that one should wear them interchangeably regardless of the game/sport played. Running shoes on a tennis court, for example, are a sprained or broken ankle waiting to happen. Running shoes are built with a thick, soft heel to maximize cushioning for straight-forward, heel-to-toe foot impacts. Playing tennis is all about sudden starts and stops, as well as moving quickly from side to side. The trouble is that, during extreme stopping, cornering, and pivoting, if the sneaker’s outsole is too rigid, the tennis player loses contact with the playing surface, which results in a loss of footing. In addition, since runners do not usually move sharply sideways, while “on the run,” the running shoe sole is totally unsuitable for the sideways movements a tennis player makes.

From Keds, which were the first tennis shoes in 1917, to today’s extraordinary designs and expensive advertising budgets, shoemakers continue to design shoes with an eye towards accommodating various types and shapes of feet. When one adds to this equation, the trendy variety of styles, the outcome speaks for itself. There is always an option available for our feet will feel comfortable while playing a friendly match of tennis.

For any of you who are thinking of taking up tennis, or are simply interested in the basics of tennis, then you will find this an informative article.

It is good idea to dress in tennis clothes, as opposed to street clothes for game play. Tennis clothing has been designed to give where necessary and provide the proper comfort level when exerting yourself and making quick movements. If you don’t want to invest in a tennis outfit, make sure you wear shorts and a shirt that have plenty of room for your movements.

If you are a beginner, you really shouldn’t think in terms of buying less expensive equipment. Your tennis racket is a very important element in becoming successful and building your skill base. Good quality rackets will always outlast poor ones, and so the investment is worth it. Look for a racquet whose weight, balance, and size of handle fit your frame.

After you’ve decided upon a good quality racquet, make sure you use good tennis balls. The bounce you will get from a good ball cannot be underestimated.

If you are truly interested in learning the game, and succeeding rapidly, I would suggest watching some matches between talented players. In person is better, but the television will do. If you watch their stokes and leg movements closely, you will begin to see that certain movements are used consistently, every time. You may also consider getting an instruction book. This is particularly helpful if you are planning on taking lessons. That way you can be familiar with the terminology prior to beginning.

If you decide to take lessons, as opposed to “learning on the job”, never be discouraged if your progress is slow. Just continue to practice the strokes as you have been taught and eventually you will find that they both improve and become second nature. There are very few natural geniuses of the game. Excellent tennis players are the product of hard work.

If you’ve decided to take up tennis for fun, or for sport, you’ll find that tennis will pay dividends to you all of your life. Tennis is excellent exercise and a great stress reliever. Additionally, tennis is a social sport. You can expect to make many friendships.

Here is a list of skills you should master, in the order they should be attempted:

1. Concentration on the game.

2. Keep your eye on the ball.

3. Foot-work and weight-control.

4. Strokes.

5. Court position.

6. Match play.

7. Tennis psychology.

A Word About Concentration

Tennis is first and foremost a game played with the mind. Yes, physical ability and skill are extremely important, but without concentration, these skills are of little use. You will find that if you develop your concentration as your first and most important skill, it will carry you far. There may be times in match play that noises from onlookers will distract. Additionally, allowing yourself to concentrate on your game will also help keep your emotions in check if you aren’t doing well with your game. The sooner you learn this vital lesson, the better. In fact, in many cases, a player will highly developed concentration skills will find that they can beat a player of great ability, if that player doesn’t possess the same abilities in his or her concentration.

Learning tennis can be the start of a live long love of the sport. If you take the time to learn the fundamentals, obtain the proper equipment and work on mastering the skills you need, one at a time, you will most certainly succeed in not only enjoying yourself, but experiencing the satisfaction of becoming a skilled athlete.
