Surprisingly enough, table tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world, with more people playing it than most other sports.

All other games were still called table tennis.

The other major change that occurred was in the 1950s, when rackets gained an underlying sheet of sponge which dramatically changed the way the game was played.

With the increasing popularity the International Table Tennis Federation decided to slow the sport down to make it more spectator friendly.

The truth is that while many of us have played casual games of ping pong, few of us have ever seriously played the game the way it was meant to be played; by the rules, and under its real name, table tennis.

Table tennis is more than a recreational game, it is a serious sport with world wide appeal, particularly in Eastern countries; it is even an Olympic sport! Like any legitimate sport, a true game is played in strict accordance with the official rules. The only problem is that many of us do not know what those rules really are. Here is a brief primer on the rules of table tennis that should allow you to understand and enjoy the game at a new level.

The game starts with one person serving to the other – the determination of who serves first can be made any way the competitors choose, although a coin toss is used in high level competition. There are simple rules that govern the serve. The serving player must toss the ball upward and away from the table – at least six inches high and without spin – and then hit the ball so that it bounces once on his side of the table before clearing the net – without contacting it – and bouncing once on the other side of the table. A ball that hits the net before landing on the opposite side of the table is a let and must be served again without penalty.

Once the ball is successfully served, play continues until a point is scored. A point is scored by an opponent several different ways: allowing the ball to bounce twice on one’s side of the table; not hitting the ball after it bounces on one’s side; hitting a ball that then bounces on one’s own side; not returning a ball hit to you; hitting the ball before it bounces on one’s side; hitting the ball twice; touching the ball with any part of your body other than your paddle hand above the wrist or the paddle; touching the table with your free hand; and failing to make a successful serve. While this list may sound long and confusing, after a few minutes of game play the various scoring scenarios will become readily apparent.

Players alternate serving with each player serving for two points each. A game consists of eleven points, and the player reaching that amount first is awarded the game. The only exception is if players are tied at ten points each, in which case the winner is the first one to attain a two point lead. After each game the players switch sides, and that continues until the match is decided. A match should be awarded to the competitor who wins the greater number of an odd number of games; i.e., best two out of three.

Table tennis is also played in doubles competition where there are two players per side. The rules for doubles are the same with two basic exceptions. When serving one must pay attention to the line that bisects the length of the table. A successful serve is played diagonally from one half of the table to the opposite box on the other side of the table. The second key difference is that teammates must alternate taking shots with neither member of the team striking the ball on consecutive turns. For example, if you serve and your opponent makes a successful return, your teammate must hit that return shot. Failure to do so results in a lost point for your team.

Typically an opponent can request a re-rack of the cups once during each game. Re-rack means that the cups can be re-arranged into virtually any shape to make the shots easier. Popular shapes would be a triangle, diamond, straight line or sidecar.
The supplies you would need for a game of Beer Pong are very simple. All you need is 14 plastic cups, 6 for each team and 2 extra for water to wash the balls. A good supply of Ping Pong Balls, some type of long table, and BEER!

Many hard-core players have custom tables for Beer Pong. You can also buy very nice
portable, fold up tables that can travel with you wherever you may want to play. These days, there are even Floating Beer Pong Tables to use in a pool or on a calm lake. There is even professional association’s popping up like “The World Series of Beer Pong” which held a 3 day $50,000 Prize Money Tournament in Las Vegas! The Pabst Blue Ribbon sponsored Tournament was held at the Flamingo in January 2009 and featured nearly 800 players from 45 states.

Beer Pong VS Beirut

Dear Drinkers,

Thanks for checking out my article to the point that I was asked to do one more this week. Just like the general public to cause more work for me. I’m just kidding… but seriously. Haha. Yeah I’m not really that funny at all.

So back to business, this week I would like to discuss one thing that has been bothering me for a while. As you know, I am a college student and, as one, I know what Beer pong is. But what I want to know is do I really? The answer, surprisingly to many, is no. Most college students have actually never played Beer pong in their lives. They have, however, played Beirut on several occasions.

What modern college kids are calling Beer pong is in actuality called Beirut. Beirut is 6 or 10 cups in a triangle on a table while teams on one or 2 try to throw ping-pong balls into their opponent’s cups. (For more details, look on out games page. It’s still under Beer pong.) Now we get to some real Beer pong.

OK, so the game of beer pong is, in fact, very similar to Beirut but at the same time, quite different. The table is the same, preferably a ping-pong table. And the balls, cups, and beer are the same. The only real difference is that there are more 10 cups per side and instead of throwing the balls; you actually hit them with a paddle. I find it to be a lot more fun. This does bring up a new topic though.

If the college scene, being that is, was, or going to be most of America, calls Beirut Beer pong, should we just switch them. Beirut will be called Beer pong and visa versa. This will solve the problem, right? I personally don’t think so. While people who were calling it the wrong name get to still call it that name the people who know it as Beirut lose out.

Pretty much it’s your decision. If you haven’t tried playing actual Beer pong, I would seriously suggest it. It’s loads of fun (much like your mom) and you end up getting really drunk (hence, why I know your mom is loads of fun). So try your hand and tell me what you think. A one inch table is preferred because that is the table people grow up playing, especially at the community center or at tournament level. I have a one inch Stiga ping pong table at home because I grew up playing with them at school tournaments.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that your table tennis table should have strong legs and supports to withstand the test of time. Some tables come with an additional leveler which is ideal for surfaces where the floor is not level. These levelers will help in keeping your table straight and level. Other things you will need to check is whether the playing surface of the table is even. Run your eye at the playing surface of the table and check that there is no warping or folds on any parts of the table.

Make sure the net clamps of the table have a soft padding under them so that they do not cause any scratch marks on the table. The clamps should also not dig into the underside of the table. Finally, check out the 30-23 rule on your Stiga ping pong table. Drop a ping pong ball from a height of 30 cm anywhere on the table and it should bounce back to about 23 cm. This 23 cm bounce should be even on parts of the table and you can be pretty sure you have one of the best quality tables.
